A sudden inrush of fear, even of vague alarm, will sometimes drive us contrary to the drift of our sympathies, just as our feet are lifted and we ourselves carried onwards by a surging crowd. Whether this be a correct interpretation of their conduct or not, it certainly harmonises with the general attitude of Jesus towards the priesthood.
